Introduction to Raleigh

Raleigh is without a doubt one of the finest cities in the country, packed with activities for all lifestyles, superb educational systems, countless career opportunities, and every type of real estate for any homebuyer. Raleigh provides convenient and affordable housing, clean safe communities, excellent entertainment and recreation, and a total sense of a high quality of life. Homes in the real estate market are nestled among rolling hills, with attention to the environment. Raleigh real estate boasts of quaint appealing neighborhoods in the midst of a major metropolitan city, all abounding with southern hospitality and friendly neighbors.

A Little Bit of History

Raleigh was found in 1792 as North Carolina’s capital city. It was so named for Sir Walter Raleigh, who endeavored to create one of the first English colonies on the shores of what would become the United States in the 1580s. Raleigh is the largest city in a urban area known as the Research Triangle. The city’s founders called Raleigh the City of Oaks, and committed themselves to preserving the wooded parcels and grassy parks of the area.

The area for the site was chosen for being near Isaac Hunter's Tavern, which was known to be popular with the state representatives of the time. There were no cities or towns on or near the site before it was picked as the capital. Raleigh is one the very few cities in the U.S. that was designed and constructed specifically to serve as a state capital. Its original borders were formed by West, East, South and North streets.

A Cultural Mecca

Raleigh is looked at as the Smithsonian of the South because of the multitude of free attractions. There is a broad scope of cultural activities, including North Carolina Symphony and The BTI Center for the Performing Arts. Its museums are of the highest distinction, from the interactive world museum, to the world’s largest museum of natural history. The arts are a big part of life in The Triangle. There are also other community-oriented events, such as summer outdoor theater, public parks, and luscious gardens. Raleigh is also the home to North Carolina Theatre, the Carolina Ballet, and the Broadway Series South.

Plenty of Outdoor Adventures

Outdoor opportunities in Raleigh center around the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic coast, both of which are located very close to the city. These two places provide a range of outdoor activities such as skiing and snowboarding and warm, sunny beaches await those along the coast. Raleigh has topnotch parks, greenway systems, and open areas across the city. The mountains of North Carolina provide many opportunities of hiking, fishing in beautiful trout streams, or camp under the stars.

Raleigh and the Research Triangle area also has a number of outstanding golf courses to select from. The Neuse Golf Club has some of the best deals in Raleigh and frequently received national honors. The Pinehurst Resort just outside of Raleigh hosted the 2005 U.S. open and is one of the top clubs in the country. For something a little closer to the Triangle, there is the Devil’s Ridge Golf Club. This four-star well-lauded course is just a few miles outside of Raleigh. Beginners should try out the Hedingham Golf Club, a municipal course just outside downtown. Whether you consider yourself a beginner on the greens or a seasoned player, Raleigh has something to fit every skill level.
